Adventures in Helsinki, pt 2: Pursuit of Happiness

Day 6 (continued): When I arrived at the hostel, I made some ramen. I met an Italian guy named Lorenzo who is also in the same program as me. We were talking about American sports and Italian sports. We also had an interesting conversation about languages and how learning Italian will only benefit you, according to him, if you want to stay in Italy or travel there. Learning Spanish, according to him, is more beneficial. I was telling him some of the haphazard phrases I know in Italian. Who knew when you say Buona Notte is the last thing you say before you sleep. Also, when I say grazie, it should sound like grazie-eh. The things I learn in Helsinki. Love it.

Day 7: Pursuit of Happiness and Haphazard Finnish Shiz
We spent most of the day at the Botanical gardens trying everything from a pea soup (in the hot weather), humpa dancing, and Nordic walking. I had a lot of fun dancing and I decided to be the leader this time. It is a lot of counting - thinking marching band and left foot. It made me miss marching in an odd way. Though, I was more elegant and not robotic. Nordic walking was quite interesting. Basically, it is walking with ski sticks. I met a Russian girl and when I spoke to her in Russian, she was laughing. Not laughing as in making fun of me (which I wouldn't be surprised) but she was laughing because how I was talking, it was cute. She is 22 years old, from St. Petersburg and is currently getting her masters. Turns out many people in my summer program in Helsinki are currently in grad school. Oh and she is also going to grad school for free!

I met another girl, Julia, who is from Washington DC! She just graduated college from Vanderbuilt University and is going to get her masters in Helsinki. She told me that the Finnish education system is really good and she is also going to school for free. While going to grad school for free is the best way to go, sometimes I wonder what to do for grad school, if I decide to go. Free in Helsinki would be a good option, but I would miss my family and friends so much. If Brian comes along with me, then I have nothing to complain about. :)

After the Finnish Oddities event at the Botanical Gardens, I decided to go to an island called Suomenlinna. It is about a ten minute boat ride from Helsinki and it was very pretty. I'll include pictures later - since I took a ton! It is a sea fortress and it was once under Swedish and Russian rule - not at the same time though. It was very historic and had a lot of war things such as cannons. A lot of cannons actually.

While walking around, I spotted an area that reminded me of a creek Brian and I would go to a lot near where we live. It makes me miss him even more. Only ten more days, which is so hard to believe. Time surely does go by quickly when you are having fun!

The day was very eventful. Tomorrow, I have class at 1pm so I think when I walk back to the hostel, I am going to catch up on some reading. I also have been playing Angry Birds a lot - getting in the Finnish spirit, I guess!
